January 26-30, 2026

We hope everyone has been keeping warm over this exceptionally cold few days! Next Monday, Feb. 2nd will be Groundhog Day and we all wait in anticipation for the result. Will the groundhog see his shadow or not? If he does not see his shadow it will mean we're getting an early Spring! If he does see his shadow - we will have 6 more weeks of Winter!

Math: We will be finishing up our measurement unit on Monday or Tuesday. We have been calculating the area of a two-dimensional shape, finding the perimeter and measuring with our rulers. Our S.W.Y.K. will be on Mon. or Tues. Our next math unit will be patterning! In patterning, we will be learning about shape patterns with changing attributes and number patterns (both growing and shrinking).

In language we continue to work on our reading comprehension. We have been learning different strategies to aid us when responding to questions based on a text. Comprehension is being able to reflect and understand the deeper meanings in a story and being able to answer questions about that content without the "answer" always being directly written in the text. It is the ability to infer, and to respond to a question using support from the text to prove/support your answer. Students will bring home a current reading comprehension assignment to share with you on Thurs. Please click the link in red to see how this work has been assessedScoring and Exemplars

We are continuing to work on our non-fiction report about animals. We are writing in complete paragraphs which include an opening sentence, three supporting details, and a closing sentence.

New WWW: probably, usually, friendly, especially, really

***Family Literacy Day is Tuesday, January 27th. Please take a few minutes to read with your child/children. Sharing your favourite childhood story, reading by taking turns (you read a paragraph - your child reads the next), reading a recipe and making a meal together; all these activities show your child that reading is a valuable part of your day and encourage your child to be a life-long reader! If you have time, take a picture and send it to school, of you sharing this important and essential skill - READING!

In Science, we will be learning about friction!

***Junglesport - parents have been sent an email from the school that requires you to give permission for your child to participate in Junglesport. Please ensure you sign the form this week so your child is able to join in this very fun and well loved experience!***
